Infrarred ordnance relies on the infrrared emissions for the adquisition and identification of the target. The bigger the infrarred emissions the target has, the fastest the adquisition is. The advantage of this system is that when launched the target gets less warning and as long as offers infrarred emissions the missile can adquire or readquire the target. The disadvantages are that if the target produces low infrarred emissions it can take a long time to be aquired and if it is conpletely cold, it will not able to adquire the target. Infrarred missiles are also vulnerable to countermeassures in the form of flares, that distract the missile from it's intended target.
