Ray tracing is a rendering technique that can realistically simulate the lighting of a scene and its objects by rendering physically accurate reflections, refractions, shadows, and indirect lighting.[1]

The ray-traced shadows are softer and more realistic than the harsher rasterized versions.

It comes with a performance impact cost, and for this reason is best paired with DLSS which improves performance.
