Free-fly refers to a period during which Star Citizen is free to play. It is essentially a demo giving full access to everything in the game, but only for a time.
During this time, players don't need a Star Citizen Game package in order to play and have access to several ships for free in their account, with all the other ships accessible by the usual in-game means such as using in-game currency.
Free-fly usually occurs alongside other events, such as Intergalactic Aerospace Expo, Invictus Launch Week or Foundation Festival.
The aim of free-fly is to bring more players to the game.
Initially free-fly was under the form of redeemable codes before becoming open to all periodically.
During the free to play period, there are also usually discounts on starters packs or specific ships, for the players who chose to continue playing once the free trial ends.
