在2262年8月，古德曼號這艘IV型貨船（船員8人）正在執行到海王星旁的軌道平台的例行補給任務。離目的地大約3小時的時候，一塊太空垃圾擊中了右舷引擎組，使船員完全無法控制飛船的航向。

古德曼號漂流了幾個小時之後才設法將飛船修復到能夠緩慢前進的程度。其後發生的事由星球上的頂尖專家們進行了調查研究。以下就是古德曼號最後發送的通訊，一段離通訊器最近的操作員的語音：

對他們最後所在位置的調查沒有發現任何殘骸，或者其它東西。古德曼號就這樣憑空消失了。

隨後幾個月裡，另外兩艘飛船在同一區域因類似的情況消失。雖然進行了更多次的調查，但未能確定到底發生了什麼。

最後，這片區域被標為禁飛區。
